Due date: May 4th
I register in the course of literary appreciation in the Costa Rican Institute of Techonology at the moment when this problem started, so our teacher put us to read cocori again (I had already read it in school). In my opinion they are exaggerating the subject too much, and to recognize the "racist" elements, it is necessary to think the worst of the author and the book. I know that there is still racism in many first and third world countries, but the book is a good reading for children and has many important values and teachings, we should stop to be offended by everything, and focus our time in write another bookks if we aren´t happy with the existing ones.
ResponderBorrarIn my humble opinion, I read that book in primary school, so I really don't remember its content. But I'm agree that in case that studies confirm the existence of racism, must be withdrawn of the primary school. I' m indigenous so I'm part of minority people in Costa Rica and now I'm in a country declared multi ethnical and pluri culture and we have to respect other cultures and ethnies.
ResponderBorrarWorking on the end of racism is really important. As bad as it sounds, discrimination is becoming part of our culture. I read Cocorí long time ago, so I don’t remember the story and can’t say if it is racist or not. If a group of people said that it is racist, it should be analyzed again by professionals to make a decision. The UN committee made more than one request and the institutions should start implementing them, instead of making one of them the most important.
ResponderBorrarDiscrimination has been an old way of thinking very difficult to eradicate over the years. As a Centroamerican country , we are part of a meeting of cultures coming from both north and south; so as civilians we have to do part of the eradication of this way f thinking. I don´t think that Cocorí can impact kids in a wrong way as teachers can do. If the teachers know how to take the topic of Cocori in a good way, they can teach many good things to kids and start to create a different way of thinking.
ResponderBorrarHowever, teaching comes not only from schools but from the home, so parents should emphasize these issues.
Costa Ricans has to focus on promoting a society of equality independently of the texts that the kids reads at school, books like Cocori can be used to demonstrate the reality instead of cover it and to teach that we have to learn to live with another kind of people.
ResponderBorrarI do not remember reading it, but I've been looking for more information about this and it seems like they won’t remove Cocorí from classrooms. While I was searching, I saw that Costa Rica ratified a Convention against Racism few months ago. So, all of us must be committed to eliminating racism and intolerance each others and include everyone to the society.
ResponderBorrarPersonal opionion:
ResponderBorrarAccording to what I remember it is not a racial discrimination book, it is about a child whith a blonde girl and his fight for her. She gave him a kiss and a rose to cocori, but it whitered. After that, he found a titi monkey yo give it to her. When he came back the girl wasn't at the beach.
I think this story is very funny and it is only a love story with many adventures that at the end leave a life teaching
I don´t remember very well the discriminatory parts of the book, but it seems to me that this book is part of our culture, which we identify as part of childhood. It all depends on how teachers explain the book, defining good or bad things. Clarifying to children the mistakes that society makes in history.
ResponderBorrarI have not read Cocorí before, but if there are experts suggesting to remove the book, I think it is the best. Anyway, the book can be acquired in bookstores and a lot of our citizens have read Cororí and the rate of discrimination is less than years ago. Besides, all will depend of the home education instead of simply a book.

BorrarI read the book many years ago but I don't remember any kind of insult about black people, actually is a good book for kids and is not necessary to change the ideology of racism starting removing a book that has been read for many generations. Remove the book from grade school classrooms just make the things worst because teachers could use it to explain topics related to racial discrimination, xenophobia and racism, that can help children to understand that they are just people, like all of us.
ResponderBorrarI think Cocori should be read, because it is part of Costa Rican culture and history. It is necessary for the teachers to orient the students in a good way, I mean cocori could be a book to teach about the differences and to fight against racism, the important part is the teacher and how they give the focus of the book.
ResponderBorrarI think that the book Cocori isn't racist, i remenber read the book in the school and the most offensive that i remenber is the expression "negrito" so the people can't be such controversial with this, besides i think that the book is part of our history.
ResponderBorrarI read Cocori and I love it. I think no all the children that read this book are going to have this attitude to Afro Caribbeans or indigenas. I think child repeat all that they listen but if the family teach them respect other persons they aren't going to say racism comments. Also the book is only a fairy tale without any malicious content I consider they are over reacted with the book.
ResponderBorrarDiscrimination has been a really big social problem, since the beginning of the society; whether by socioeconomic status or racial ethnicity. I read Cocori when I was at school, and I do not remember any insult in the book. But if there are some, I think the book should be read too, but with a different approach pointing to the students where is the discrimination present in the story to prevent it. Because the book is an important part of our culture.
ResponderBorrarI think that the problem in Cocorí is the redaction in some paragraphs that can be a little bit racism for example in the beginning when the writer describe a Cocorí and he says that the Cocorí looks like a monkey for your face, but I think is a little problem, because I think that the plot of the history is very successful because in the time when the history is told the treatment that the white people give to the black people is just like in Cocorí also I think the writer did a good job of representing the thinking of children whose world and lives were very different in the books say that the girl don’t know and she got scarred when met to Cocorí and don’t think t that he was a human, she thought that the boy was a monkey, but is totally normal because first she was a child and second all her life she has seen while people so of course is logic that her reaction is that, on the other hand Cocorí knew who were the white men so when he met to the girl he don0t surprise of her skin color the thing that surprised him is her beauty.
ResponderBorrarI think that is a good idea. I remember when I was y the school that there ware lot of Jokes about colour skin people, and a lot of them related with this book, but not only. In my aponion they should review the content of all book and what transmite to the students. And obout the racism, this politic can't elemineted it, this change begin with the education in the house.
ResponderBorrarI think the problem is in the interpretation that people can give the book, but under a supervision of educators can be treated those topics and reading comprehension, to avoid misunderstandings,
ResponderBorraran dealing with discrimination issues.
Instead of discriminating against African-American culture, is a way of knowing and familiarizing the children and youth of these generations with their traditions. So remove the book ‘Cocorí’ from classrooms, would eliminate one great Costa Rican reading with a main character with black skin.
I don’t remember clearly this story but I think the story was wrote without bad intentions, it was wrote to show other values that society have to apply every day but we forgot those other values in order to criticize and just look for the attention of people. You perfectly can read this book and learn about culture without misunderstandings. If a child or any person became racist after read a simply book like this is because he didn’t get the correct education from his parents or teachers, so, the main problem isn’t in a book, actually, the main problem is in the accompaniment parents give to children.
ResponderBorrarI think cocori, is an amazing book. In the book we can found a lot of information of the old Costa Rica. But yes in our country most of the people are racist, maybe they don't know they are racist, but they are. So for the the government need to promote more politics about ethnic origin and traditions.
ResponderBorrarI don't read this but, I investigated and see some news in some weeks before, I think that this book is created to raise awareness in the people but not generate racism and is logic because before the people didn't believe in that only write and this is a now problem, I think that is no necessary remove the book but not use it for education.
ResponderBorrarIn my opinion i think that Cocori is a good book, also in this days the mentality of the people have changed compared at the mentality of the people of that time.
ResponderBorrarThe people of these days think that they exist racist in this book but in my opinion is that maybe when they write the book dont make with that purpose and also when they write that the idea it was to express somo activities or type of life of cocori

ResponderBorrarThe article talks about some pretty interesting information about luck and hard work. It explains the way people in general, and Ticos in particular, see luck. It says that ticos have some curious traditions to bring luck. But in my opinion the most important thing about the article is what it says about working hard. I truely believe that luck won't bring good things, or the things that we want or need, for itself. We shouldn't let everything to fate, we should work hard for the things that we want for us. But, as the article explained, there are some things that are out of our control, and because of that we might not get the things that we worked for, even if we worked hard for them.
So when we want something, we should know that there are some things that we can't control, and some that we do. But we should always work hard for them so we can have more posibilities to get the things that we want.
The article talks about several New Year traditions of some Costa Rican families, I have heard about most of them but my family don't practice any of this traditions because we don't believe on them, I think this are funny traditions, but I don't think that it help.
ResponderBorrarI believe in the hard work, in build your opportunities, I know there are things that you can't control, and sometimes you need a bit of luck but isn't the most important thing, because if you don’t work and just wait for luck, you won't achieve your goals.
I believe in God and I hope a little bit of help from him, but I will work hard to achieve my goals, because I want to achieve my goals by me, by my effort and don't because I am a lucky man.
I know people who waits for luck because thinks that is the most important thing and really believe in that but if they don't do anything they won't achieve their goals.
The article talks about some traditions that exist in Costa Rica to attract good luck in the New Year.
ResponderBorrarIn my opinion, I believe that luck can not be generated or bought from an amulet or something like that.
I think that people who struggle and take advantage of life's opportunities can be successful and be benefited.
However, I find it very funny that people believe in all these amulets and defend them.
In my family, in the New Year, we used to eat together and wait for the countdown. In past years my mom took the suitcase around the block to travel that year, and that was not fulfilled.
So, I do not believe in those customs, because I have done them and they have not been fulfilled.
The article talks about some traditions that Ticos perform to have good luck, in the personal case if I have made some of those traditions more than everything influenced by my family, I have eaten the 12 grapes in 12 seconds to ensure prosperity, I am superstitious without However, I believe that each person creates his own luck by taking advantage of the opportunities presented to him.
ResponderBorrarI consider that successful people have this condition because of their effort and why they know how to take advantage of opportunities, although it is true sometimes you need a bit of luck to achieve the goals, but we simply can't sit down and wait for that luck, you have to work so that things happen.
Those who believe in luck, argue that the conditions of life may depend on the destination or the existence and use of amulets, so since believing in luck does not harm anyone, everyone should be free to explain those seemingly fortuitous situations as they can and wish. In addition, just as no person can prove that an amulet changed its fate, there is no scientist capable of demonstrating the opposite in an unquestionable way.

ResponderBorrarI think luck is something that causes people have faith or wait somethings to happen by doing an action. In Costa Rica, we grew up believing in luck and in our culture and families we have some believes that luck is determine by doing something. In the article are mentioned some of the believes Costa Ricans have specially in the New Years becuase we have always associated it with the day in which we determine how is our year going to be. Maybe people give importance to being lucky because in past years and decades, our ancestors had some believes that have been passed generation by generation and the importances of this is that we believe that doing something, we will get something we wish or we had like a lot and it has been difficult for us to obtained it. So, for us as a Latin American culture, most believes are around religious aspects, so many of our believes of beeing lucky, are related to pray to God or other Saints and also to be a nice person and doing waht we think is the correct to do.
ResponderBorrarIn my personal opinion, luck is when a person usually gets what he or she have always dreamed to have or just gets good things unexpectedly. Some people think there are lucky and unlucky people from the moment they are born. However, this is a belief I don’t agree with because I think lucky people wish things so much and put an effort on what they want, that to achieve the goal is just the result. Also, unexpected good news, for me, are just a consequence of being a good person in your life. I read a book called “The Secret”, it is about how to be successful in life and how to achieve your goals. This is a really interesting book because it tells that there’s an “attraction law” that makes your thoughts come true, no matter if they are thoughts about good things or bad things. I think people, specially Ticos, see luck like the book says, just think about something and it will happen. That’s the reason why we implement all those traditions in our lives, to have more chances of being lucky and happy.

ResponderBorrarLuck is "Success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions". I don't believe in luck, each person creates his own destiny, according to the decisions he makes in life. Run around the block with a suitcase, wearing yellow clothes on January 1 for good luck and happiness, collecting Santa Lucía flowers to store in our wallets to provide us with love, health and money... none of these things are going to make anything happen. We create out own destiny and we have to work hard in order to achieve our goals.
As Albert Einsteins used to said: "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted"; I feel lucky when I feel love, passion and happiness in my life, and none of that can be achieved without striving.

ResponderBorrarOne of the things that define and makes difference between the countries and cultures are the traditions that marks the sence of permanence in the society. It is really important to respect the traditions and the rituals of people even on things like get “lucky” all the year, including if we don’t believe on that.
We are living in a society that is starting to fight for the rights of the people with different sexual preferences and accept, but we still judge the people that have different preferences in music, religion and even on things like football. All that things are part of the culture and we all should be respectful of that.
In Costa Rica we enjoy the traditions not only in new year, but also on important dates like independence’s day, Holy Week and Christmas, and the most important thing in all these dates is the family, because it is also a tradition to be together in all the important moments. In conclusion, we have always to respect the people for every aspect of the person, including the traditions that also is a characteristic of the person which represents the country this person comes from.
The article is about traditions that we have as Costa Ricans to get luck in different aspects, specially in New Year. Since I was a child, my family has always practiced this kind of traditions. We always run around the neighborhood whit a suitcase. Also, we eat 12 grapes at 12 midnight and we count each one. My grandma always uses yellow underwear because she thinks it’s a way to get luck! Personally, I don’t believe in that, but it is funny. So, I do it. I don’t believe in luck. Personally, I think you have to work hard to get all things you want in your life. Nothing comes from heaven, so, if you want to achieve something, you have to look for the needed resources to do that. Obviously, there are people who have the road a little easier because of different factors, money for example. However, we all have to do a huge effort to become in that person we want to be.
ResponderBorrarThe article talks about some traditions that we have in Costa Rica to get luck, since I was a child I'm hearing some of that in my family and some friends too, it's something very common for us hear about it. The good or bad luck it's something superstitious and it varies in everyone, I don't believe in most of the traditions that are mentioned in the article, because I've never done noone before and I don't think that will happen in the future.

ResponderBorrarI think that luck is simply a feeling that something happens in our favor or against. For me it has nothing to do with the fact of doing things like count the number of seeds in a grape for playing lottery or avoiding going under a ladder.
I believe that luck exists but we can not make it change with any kind of actions.
I think people are superstitious and that's why they believe in luck.

ResponderBorrarIn my opinion the traditions and costums of the family Costa Rican are very important because define our Culture further are fundamentals in the celebration of New year. Although I personally do not know many of these traditions are part of the wealth cultural of the different regions of our country.
ResponderBorrarThese cultures Costa Rican and Latin American are very attached to the existence of a God or a superior being which is of fundamental support for our lives, in contrast with other cultures that put a stronger emphasis on individual initiative as a factor of success. However, i agree that without import the belief we sharing a desire to excel and get ahead with our lives.
In my opinion luck is when something good happened to you and you don’t have planned it. People always want to be a lucky person, indeed they have certain rituals that they thick will attract lucky, health, and prosperity, for example in New Year’s Day some of the rituals are: eat 12 grapes in 12 seconds in order to secure prosperity and even find out what number to play in the lottery, wear their underwear inside out and then put it back on the right way after twelve o’clock, families that fill up their fridges to ensure a yearlong supply of food, wear yellow clothes on January 1 for good luck and happiness and others. For me if you want good things in your life you need to do something for this, not expected for a randomly and uncontrol change to happened.
